On May 16, 1943, during World War II, the United States Army Air Forces carried out one of the most daring and successful bombing raids of the war, known as Operation Chastise. This operation targeted the industrial heartland of Germany, specifically the Ruhr Valley, and has since become famous for its innovative techniques and the bravery of the airmen involved.

The operation is particularly remembered for the use of a then-revolutionary type of weapon known as the “bouncing bomb.” Designed by engineer Barnes Wallis, the bouncing bomb was engineered to skip across the water and detonate against the dam walls of key targets. This innovative approach was intended to breach the Möhne and Eder dams, critical to Germany’s hydroelectric power supply and industrial production.

Commanded by Group Captain Leonard Cheshire, the operation involved the No. 617 Squadron of the Royal Air Force, which was made up of bomber crews from various Commonwealth nations, including American aviators who were embedded in British squadrons. The mission was fraught with peril, requiring precision flying at low altitudes, evasion of defensive fire, and careful timing in the release of the specialized bombs.

In total, 19 Lancaster bombers participated, and the mission commenced on the evening of May 15, 1943. Despite these challenges, 11 of the bombers successfully delivered their payloads. The Eder Dam faced a similar fate shortly after.
