Design, Markings, and Condition

This example is NSN and dated 1861 with a 39″ round rifled barrel. The barrel shows a smooth dark brown patina with pin‑prick surface oxidation; the lock plate carries a grey patina clearly marked “TOWER/1861” and the rear of the hammer is stamped “CROWN.” These period stamps authenticate British manufacture and government inspection during a key production year.

Barrel and Rifling

The bore is reported as good with strong rifling, though areas of frosting and pitting are visible in the grooves—typical of a working service piece more than 160 years old. Strong rifling is important for demonstrating the original ballistic intent of the pattern and for collectors who inspect mechanical integrity.

Stock, Hardware, and Provenance

The brass butt‑plate is inscribed “J. Benedict 16th NY ART/ Co. D.,” tying this musket to identified Union service. The stock shows expected usage and wear with two visible cracks—one at the leftside butt and another on the right side between the front barrel band and nose cap. Original nipple protector and chain remain intact, a desirable original accessory that indicates careful retention of period parts. Inventory reference AL8113 is provided for verification.

Caliber and Practical Notes

Chambered in .577, this caliber was the standard for the 1853 Enfield pattern and offers context for ammunition dimensions and period ballistics. The .577 round is a large black‑powder projectile designed for massed volley effectiveness and historical accuracy when discussing period ballistics. For collectors and interpreters, understanding the caliber informs safe handling, documentation, and display decisions.
