Design and Period Features

The BRITAIN/ENGLAND BRITISH PATTERN 1858 SMOOTH BORE MUSKET is an approximately .62 caliber percussion musket with an overall length near 54.25″ and a 39.125″ round smooth bore barrel. The barrel shows a fair bore with light roughness and an exterior that is bright with mixed brown stains and slight pitting around the nipple area. Birmingham proof marks and 25 bore stamps are present, and the rear band carries a sighting notch typical of utilitarian service pieces.

Lock, Furniture, and Stock Details

The lock is marked 1863 over TOWER at the center with a crown at the tail; the lock and hammer exhibit edge lines and a smooth brown patina. Brass furniture presents an even aged patina and remains in very good condition. The wooden stock is service-worn with issue dents and dings, an E over 17 marking on the left flat, and the maker’s name JOHN MARSON stamped on the underside of the butt. The ramrod is present, swivels are absent, and while the hammer can be released from half cock the action otherwise functions correctly.

Tactical and Range Considerations

As a smoothbore, the approx. .62 caliber musket is best understood for its historical role: effective at close range with round ball or buckshot loads and designed for massed volley fire rather than pinpoint accuracy. For modern range use, handloads and low-pressure rounds under experienced supervision offer the safest approach. Its Single Shot category and simplicity make it appealing for controlled demonstrations and living-history shooting events.

At $1450.99, this piece represents a reasonably priced example for collectors seeking authentic markings, mid-19th century proofing, and intact brass furniture. Brand: Britain/England; Model: Various. View product details and pricing and confirm specifics before arranging inspection or purchase.

Collectibility and Care

This musket was already obsolete when produced and was commonly issued to native troops in regions such as India and Egypt, which adds to its historical narrative. Proper preservation—controlled humidity, light cleaning, and professional gunsmith inspection—will protect the lockwork and brass while retaining original patina and markings.
